The Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies (IPSDS), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria held her maiden edition of Strategic Security Lecture Series delivered by Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Mni, OFR. on Wednesday 8th October, 2025. While delivering the lecture titled: “Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure: the Role of NSCDC”, Professor Audi who is the Commandant General of NSCDC disclose that Nigeria has more than a thousand, seven hundred and two vandalization spots across the nation.

Therefore, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is very key in the fight against vandals as such applications has helped his agency to record huge success in their operations while protecting critical national assets, and it reduces casualties of his men on duty. On the role of NSCDC in protecting critical national assets, the Commandant General said that vandalism is a well syndicated crime involving the community, security officers and high profile individuals. In the light of the above, the agency has zero tolerance for any officer caught in such nefarious act, as NSCDC has demissed more than 100 officers found wanton for related offence to face the full consequences.

Considering the importance and difficulties of protecting critical national assets, Professor Audi noted that the merits of Artificial Intelligence are far-reaching and outweighs any demerit, like the concern of AI causing high rate of unemployment. To this, he said that any nation that cannot protect her national assets is doomed, because such failure will lead to economic meltdown, insecurity, poverty etc.

More so, considering the challenges of inadequate manpower of the agency which is about 25 thousand trained arms personnel, there is a need for any nation serious in protection of her assets to adopt modern, innovative and technological aided approaches in the fight against crimes and criminalities such as vandalization.
